Sara: the Conscious and the Unconscious
by Eugenio Carmi

It’s not easy to know Sara. But I know her well and I’m very happy to write some of my thoughts about her for her exhibition at the Libreria Bocca in Milan.

I regard her as being an ancient soul, which doesn’t mean that she’s out of touch with our times, but I believe that, with her silence and the way she lets herself be absorbed by her poetic feelings, she has the manners and virtues of every age, from the past to the contemporary world that we all live in. When I look at her works, they seem to me to be her true self-portrait in which I recognize her certainties and her doubts, and, above all, the intimate and invisible aspects of her soul.

In her works, I perceive an unconscious, demure eroticism that blends with her inner purity and the fact that she belongs to the unknown universe that her delicate abstract pictures reveal.

As I have stated on other occasions, in my opinion she is also a living oxymoron: on the one hand, she accepts our technological age with great spontaneity, but, on the other, there’s another side to her, which I find attractive — that is, the feminine tenderness that makes her works so fascinating.

The way she offers herself in her abstract works reveals the inner nature of females of every period and, reminiscent of Klee, she gives visibility to what is, for her, invisible.

I would like to interpret this as an unconscious message to men, who have hitherto played a leading role in art: it is a message that confirms the female presence — so shy, so stirring — in the history of the world.
Sara.
